Screening, Bonding & Insurance

Screening - References, criminal background check, driving record history and (beginning in late 2008 a credit check); other screening is available upon request (ie, drug screening)

Bonding - Caregivers are fidelity-bonded (theft)

Liability Insurance - Caregivers are insured for liability (not Worker's Compensation). NOTE: Clients should check homeowner’s insurance for adequate liability coverage.

 

Training Level

80% of our caregivers have nursing assistant or healthcare-related backgrounds; those who do not have verifiable experience must take a caregiver skills lab. We select caregivers who are interested in taking ongoing education at their own expense.

We have a close working relationship with the new SW Portland training school, Caregiving Careers, Inc. www.CNA-Careers.com which offers classes in the following subjects to caregivers, clients and family members.

Taxes & Worker's Compensation

Taxes - Caregiver Connection, Inc. is a referral service that matches screened and qualified caregivers with clients who direct hire them for a referral fee.  Because caregivers are often considered domestic employees of clients, we do not pay, track or report caregiver earnings. While some caregivers choose to classify themselves as independent contractors, we recommend consulting with a tax or accounting professional and/or enlisting a payroll service. We have a working relationship with Melinda Johnson at Paychex. A payroll service such as Paychex can handle net pay calculations, mandatory tax deposits, and required payroll tax returns, including W-2's at year end. Worker’s Compensation - Caregivers may be  generally viewed as domestic employees of clients; worker’s compensation is NOT covered in this arrangement but clients may choose to purchase this; we also recommend checking homeowners insurance for adequate liability coverage. Caregivers are covered for liability.

Note about Auto Insurance -Our liability policy does NOT cover caregivers while driving. We check caregiver auto insurance cards upon admittance to our registry but cannot guarantee that it remains current after they are accepted.  Therefore, clients should verify that caregiver auto insurance is current, or consider providing their own transportation.
